In the joining of two superposed Parisian apartments, I was invited to design a staircase which integrated a double-height bookshelf. The resolved design consisted of every second stair run extending into a perpendicular shelf. This allows books to be accessed from both the living room, and the staircase. As the books screen or reveal movement on the staircase, they can be rearranged to reveal moments of transition between floors... A head which appears out of nowhere, a foot which flutters by....
